Sept. 18, 2007 -- A UAE-Austrian consortium between Aqua Engineering GmbH and Tecton Engineering and Construction has won a Dh446 million [US$121.43 million] engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract from the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) for a 20 million imperial gallon per day (MIGD) sea water reverse osmosis desalination plant at Hamriyah Power Station.
S. Lakshmanan, managing director of Tecton Engineering and Construction, said the scope of the work includes design, construction and commissioning of the plant.
"Desalination by reverse osmosis is becoming more and more popular internationally and in the Gulf region for its reliability and lower production cost," he said.
Austria-based Aqua Engineering GmbH, part of the BWT/Christ Water Technology Group, is working closely in association with Ajman-based Tecton Engineering and Construction LLC for the construction of the plant.
The consortium recently successfully completed one reverse osmosis desalination plant in Qidfa (Fujairah) and a similar project is nearing completion in Al Zawrah (Ajman).
Meanwhile, Tecton has been awarded a contract worth Dh323 million by the Abu Dhabi Transmission and Dispatch Company (Transco) to upgrade the Mirfa and Madinat Zayed water transmission network.
The work includes laying new DN 800 carbon steel pipes over a stretch of 60 kilometers through deserts and marshy tracts.
It also involves construction of pumping stations and four concrete reservoirs with a capacity of 1.5 million gallons each.
He said that the work also encompasses complete hydraulic calculation and analysis of pumps and pipeline systems, surge analysis, instrumentation design and engineering, supply and installation of pumps, motors, control and instrumentation systems, switchgears and chlorination equipment.
The project is scheduled for completion in 18 months. This is a fast-track project, requiring high-caliber technical and managerial expertise due to the multi-faceted scope of the work.
Currently, the company is bidding for many more large-scale projects on a turnkey basis in the UAE.
