CHICAGO, IL, April 16, 2004 -- Varion Systems, the software development and value-added reseller division of GeoAnalytics, Inc, has completed a comprehensive GIS-based computerized maintenance management system for the City of Hot Springs, Arkansas.
The project's objectives included improved citizen response, infrastructure consolidation, and a centralized application for day-to-day management and maintenance of the city's water system, wastewater system and lift stations.
The Hot Springs Utilities Department selected Varion Systems to implement Cityworks, a GIS-based computerized maintenance management system from Azteca Systems. Using ESRI's 8.3 technology in conjunction with SQL Server 2000, the city now has a centralized system to manage all aspects of service requests and work orders for their utilities.
Varion Systems provided full cradle to grave implementation services throughout the project including requirements gathering, application customization, geodatabase design services, software installation, testing, and training. Azteca Systems provided additional on-site training.
"The city performed a comprehensive search for an enterprise maintenance management system", said Paul Braun, Varion Systems' President. "Cityworks offered them the best combination of best practices including GIS integration, cost reporting and ease of deployment. We were excited to work with them".
Cityworks allows the city to keep detailed formal records for archiving and tracking purposes as past requests were manually documented and stored. "We're just getting the staff familiar with it (Cityworks) and building up the database," said Hot Springs Utilities Director Don Cochran. "Now we'll be able to track the work that was completed, and inform our constituents when and where the request was completed," added Cochran. As the system evolves, the City will deploy formal performance review reports.
The city went live with Cityworks in the Utilities department in early March 2004 with plans to extend its use in the future to other departments.

Cityworks (www.azteca.com) is the only GIS-based computerized maintenance management system on the market. Its core functionality is built as an extension to ESRI's ArcView GIS, with additional tools to meet specific needs. Cityworks contains a detailed asset inventory for sewer, water, stormwater, streets, signs, traffic, and parks. It also supports the ability to create service requests and work orders, inspections, tests, work tasks, and resource (labor, material, equipment) tracking. Cityworks also supports GASB34 financial reporting standards for infrastructure assets.
