Black & Veatch and Greeley and Hansen have been awarded a contract by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago to develop a master plan to guide capital improvements for the Stickney Water Reclamation Plant.

Black & Veatch, a leading global engineering, construction and consulting company, and Greeley and Hansen, a national consulting engineering firm headquartered in Chicago specializing in water, wastewater and solid waste projects, announced today that they have been awarded a contract by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC) to develop a master plan to guide capital improvements for the 1,200 million gallon per day (mgd) Stickney Water Reclamation Plant (WRP). The Stickney WRP is one of the largest wastewater treatment facilities in the world and serves more than 2 million people in a 260 square mile area including central Chicago and 43 suburban communities.

"Our first step is to evaluate components of the Stickney WRP that will require improvements and upgrades over the next 20 years," said Gary Shimp, Black & Veatch Stickney project manager. "Once our preliminary evaluation is complete, our team will develop a prioritized master plan for capital improvements."

"Municipal utilities have limited budgets; therefore, capital improvement spending must be focused on the highest priority items," said Joe Popeck, Greeley and Hansen deputy project manager.

The Stickney WRP has been in service since the 1930s. The master plan will enable the MWRDGC to make orderly and planned improvements to its facilities and allow the Stickney WRP to continue to produce exceptional quality effluent into the next half century.

Black & Veatch completed a smaller study in 1995 for the MWRDGC, which focused on solids processing and provided insight into some of the Stickney WRP's most significant problems. Both Black & Veatch and Greeley and Hansen have also completed recent design projects for the MWRDGC.

The Stickney WRP comprehensive master planning project is scheduled to be complete in 2005.
