REDHILL, Surrey, UK, June 25, 2012 -- Welsh Water is expanding its AMP5 water quality program with a new initiative Go to Green, an effort that is expected to increase water treatment works' (WTW) resilience and enhance water quality for communities throughout Wales. The program, covering both design and construction services, will be delivered for Welsh Water by Black & Veatch.

The initiative includes a wide range of improvements across 12 WTWs and represents an investment of £97.4 million. The scope includes design and construction of new WTWs, expansion and refurbishment of existing works, and control system upgrades. "The framework marks a significant investment in Wales' infrastructure. The decision to engage Black & Veatch for this program is a reflection of the value and service we have delivered previously for Welsh Water and its customers," said Cindy Wallis-Lage, President of Black & Veatch's global water business.

Black & Veatch will be the main contractor; responsible for design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the improvements under a collaborative delivery model. According to Steve Canney, Black & Veatch's UK Director of Capital Delivery, "Go to Green is truly a program approach that has been developed by working in close partnership with Welsh Water." All of the projects encompassed by Go to Green have been combined into a single program of work. By packaging the improvements in this way Welsh Water has increased the opportunity to create savings. "A great deal more efficiency can be captured when we have access to all the work and can truly plan, design, procure and construct across multiple schemes," Canney added.

Black & Veatch's integrated program management, design and construction capability means the company is ideally suited to delivering broad-based programs such as Go to Green. The first projects will commence in spring 2012, and work will continue at sites across Wales until 2015.

Editor's notes
• The program requires the flexibility to deliver enhancements on WTWs with outputs ranging from 250,000 to 53,000,000 liters per day
• The expertise Black & Veatch will provide encompasses mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and control (MEICA) design; process design and civil design as well as civil construction, MEICA installation and process commissioning. There is also a construction design and management coordinator (CDMC) role
• Black & Veatch has been one of Welsh Water's framework partners since AMP3
• Since 2000 Black & Veatch's Welsh team has delivered more than 150 design and build projects for Welsh Water.
