Crystal River, Fla., awards USFilter renewal to continue providing complete water and wastewater services
CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla., Nov. 2, 2001 — The City of Crystal River, Fla., awarded a five-year contract renewal to USFilter Operating Services for the continued operation, maintenance and management of its complete water and wastewater treatment systems. The partnership between the city and USFilter, which began 10 years ago, has generated nearly $1 million in savings for Crystal River.
The contract renewal, valued at approximately $3 million, calls for USFilter to continue operating Crystal River's 1.5 million-gallon-per-day (MGD) wastewater treatment plant as well as the associated collection system and pump stations, and two water treatment plants with 1.2 MGD and 0.75 MGD capacities and the associated distribution system.
USFilter will also provide meter reading services for drinking water as well as wastewater effluent reuse and biosolids land application. In addition, the company will install new water and sewer lines, rehabilitate the pump stations and maintain city fire hydrants.
"We have been very happy with the service provided by USFilter," said Jim Farley, interim city manager and chief of police, Crystal River. "They have a great 10-year track record, and we look forward to working with them in the future."
When USFilter began providing operations and management services to Crystal River in 1991, the city faced extensive fines for both water and wastewater issues and was under a building moratorium and numerous consent orders from the Environmental Protection Agency and Florida Department of Environmental Protection. USFilter immediately addressed the consent orders' requirements by spending its own funds to prevent additional fines from being levied and worked closely with the city to resolve the treatment and performance issues.
"Outstanding service has made this renewal possible," said Robert Dohoney, general manager, southern business center, USFilter Operating Services. "Despite stiff competition, Crystal River's choice to continue its partnership with USFilter exemplifies the numerous benefits that a long-term partnership can bring to a community. Since our partnership began, Crystal River has met or exceeded all environmental mandates while at the same time reducing costs for its citizens. We look forward to providing continued superior service for many more years to come."
